Vintage, mid-century, signed, wood-sculpted lamp, by renowned wood maker and artist, Rémi Thiam (1927- 2012.)
The history of the Thiam wood-carving family from the city of Metz in Lorraine, France near Germany, started with Rémi's father, Aime.
The Thiams are both well-documented and famous for producing magnificent pieces of art in the form of tableaux, marquetry and sculptures carved out of
wood from ''native'' trees of the region, like oak, plum and walnut.
Like his father and famous siblings, Louis and Albert, Rémi possessed the same passion and talent for marquetry, wood-carving and was known to still be found sketching
and making new creations, all the way up until his death in '2012.
Although he started as a young man, Rémi's reputation as talented artist later brought him fame as a ''le chantre des gravures lorraines'' (the cantor
of Lorraine engravings in relief), where he created daily scenes of street and home life as well as ''typical'' decorations.
Outside of his workshop, he was also known as a sculptor and from the 1960's to 1970's, he belonged to a famous group of Moselle artists and later, had one
of his works offered to former President of France, Georges Pompidou.
This particular piece, reflects his unique style. Depending on which angle it's viewed, the smooth curves and lines, take on different forms and shapes.
With the lightbulb, it resembles a seal sitting on a rock, balancing a ball on its nose. At another angle, it could be a cat. The base itself, takes on the face of an owl or
other bird of prey.
~ Signed ''R. Thiam'' on the left, bottom part of the base.
~ Functions perfectly with a B-22 type bayonette bulb. (Bulb not included.)
~ In stunning, original condition with what appears to be naturally occurring signs of age, consistent with time, which take nothing
away from its beauty.
~ The piece has been gently cleaned to preserve its natural patina.
~ Base is covered in felt, to protect surfaces.
~ Comes with original plug and ''on-off'' switch.
Whether placed on a shelf, sideboard, pedestal, side or bedside table, this is a most unique sculpture and conversation piece, that will
stand out in in any given MCM or rustic-contemporary space.
As writer Pierre Brasme states in his book on the Moselle and its artists...
''To own a Thiam is to keep, inscribed in the woods, a parcel of the heritage, traditions and soul of Lorraine.''
