As per the direct testimony of the heirs, it is attributed by family tradition to the artist Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins.
The painting is an original oil on canvas in first patina and is accompanied by a beautiful coeval gilt frame.
Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins (Philadelphia USA July 25, 1844 - June 25, 1916)
was a realist painter, photographer, sculptor and fine arts educator.
He is widely recognized as one of the most important artists in American art history.
Throughout his professional career, from the early 1870s until his health began to fail some forty years later, Eakins worked with accuracy from life, choosing the inhabitants of his hometown of Philadelphia as his subjects.
He painted several hundred portraits, usually of friends, family members or prominent people in the arts, sciences, medicine and the clergy that give us a glimpse of Philadelphia's intellectual life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In addition, Eakins produced a series of large-scale paintings that took the portrait out of the living room and into the offices, streets, parks, rivers, and arenas of his city.
These active outdoor locations allowed him to paint the subject that inspired him most: the nude or lightly clothed figure in motion. In this way he could model body forms in full sunlight and create images of deep space using his studies of perspective.
