Oil On Cardboard Bord De Rivière 19th Century Eugene Labitte This oil on cardboard is not signed, probably Eugène Labitte, (without certainty.) We are not sure for the author but the touch strongly recalls Eugène Labitte It is finely executed, with high quality Medallions of artists by Victor Giffard photographer, press correspondent extracts 1919 Our painter did not become so until quite late. While early he turned out to be an elite musician. Ingres had his violin, Labitte has his piano. He only leaves his easel for the keyboard. At eleven he won the Honorary Music Prize. Despite the insistence of famous master musicians, the father of our artist, director of the lunatic asylum of Clermont in the Oise, opposed this orientation, reserving his post for his son. His studies completed and his volunteering accomplished, Eugène Labitte took office for ten years. He devoted himself to it alongside his doctor father. A brutal intervention by the State, which acquired the establishment, interrupted his career. Having frequented the artistic world a lot and carrying within him a taste for painting, he did not hesitate and resolutely embarked on this new path. He came to Brittany and began to paint. We find him in 1887 in Pont-Aven working alongside Granchi-Taylor and Gauguin. After further studies at the Cormon workshop, he returned to Concarneau in 1888, which he has not left since. From the start, he devoted himself to the landscape. The charm of the Breton countryside, the tender light of the undergrowth, the fantasy of small paths, the melancholy of the great moors, the small straw houses which smoke under the trees, the haymaking which sees idylls bloom, the golden harvests which shiver under the sun, the pink enchantment of blossoming apple trees, the fresh bubbly streams running through the meadows, all these captivating and sweet paintings of our beautiful countryside with here and there an escape to the sea, all these paintings were gently vibrates the delicate light of our country, Eugène Labitte painted them as they are, in turn dazzling muffled or dark .... His painting The Kiss currently at the Museum of Chartres earned him in 1908 a first award, a mention honorable ... Unlike the Concarnoise production mainly devoted to port scenes and markets, that of Eugène Labitte stands out completely. His themes, perfectly described by Giffart, surprisingly show his predilection for rural landscapes. He likes painting on the ground but also, like Alfred Guillou, the work in the workshop from clichés and models taking the pose. He continues to paint with his serene and smiling philosophy, spending his hours between his piano and his easel. The pipe lurking at the corner of his lips and Tic, his old fellow dog lying next to him. Easy-going, friendly and smiling, he is the best of friends, concludes Victor Giffard. It is in a good state of conservation, there is a very nice work of light, a gilded frame of the later 70s. The photos are an integral part of the description.
