Madonna dell'Uva is a stunning picture realised in Italy in the early 40s.
This precious piece is composed by a printed glass which represents an early painting by Pierre Mignard called "The Virgin of the Grapes", now exhibited at Musée du Louvre, Paris. The frame is double (you cannot really perceive it from the pictures). The back one is gold and on the top we have the sage green one. The frame is made of wood and covered with a finely decorated chalk covered then with precious gold leaf. It shows tiny signs of the time passed and few missing parts which are difficult to notice and doesn't compromise the beauty of this antique piece. There is also a breathtaking aspect of this picture...it can be lighted on! A switcher permits to dimly light up the back of the stamped glass and the effect is stunning! The painting's cloudy background becomes a warm sunset. Really romantic and poetical effect!
In Italy, this kind of pictures were commonly hung in the master bedrooms, lighted up all night long. This was symbol of protection during your sleep and a functional way to always find your way when standing up in the night from your bed.
