Vintage Design

Very large "Bird of Paradise Leaves" table lamp, produced by Maison Charles in France around 1970.

This sculptural composition combines a cream-lacquered cubic metal base with a cluster of long, gilt bronze leaves, whose open volumes create an elegant interplay of light and shadow. The rectangular fabric shade extends this verticality and enhances the overall decorative character.

Renowned for its creations inspired by the plant kingdom, Maison Charles developed an immediately recognizable decorative vocabulary from the 1950s onward, where chiseled bronze and brass interact with highly sophisticated naturalistic forms. These light fixtures are now considered benchmarks of 20th-century French decorative design.
