Vintage Design

This elegant coffee table was designed by Severin Hansen for the Danish manufacturer Haslev Møbelsnedskeri during the 1960s. The geometric table is crafted from high-quality rosewood in a dark, noble shade of brown. Hansen's characteristic angular connection between the legs and the tabletop gives it a refined touch. The simple and minimalist design will complement many rooms, adding a subtle yet expressive touch. The original signature is on the bottom side of the tabletop.

Severin Hansen is a Danish designer known and admired around the world for his excellent designs, developed from his iconic constructions. One corner of the table is enough to know that it was designed by Severin Hansen. He first attracted wider attention with the geometric forms of his furniture in the 1950s. The elegant simplicity of the designs emphasizes Hansen's craftsmanship and his industrial mindset.

Haslev Møbelsnedkeri is a traditional Danish manufacturer that has been making furniture since the early 1950s. Each Haslev product is made from only the best parts of wood. Especially tables made of beech wood and moving parts are classics of Scandinavian design. In the 1970s, Haslev Møbelsnedskeri, together with Royal Copenhagen, produced a series of coffee tables with ceramic decoration. To this day, Haslev continues to produce high-quality hand-finished furniture in the old furniture tradition.

The table is in original vintage condition. It shows minor signs of age-related wear and tear, with some slight discoloration on the tabletop.

About the Creator

Severin Hansen

Danish furniture designer Severin Hansen Jr. is best remembered for his table and desk designs in the classic, Danish midcentury modern style. In the 1950s and early '60s, his work was produced by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri—a furniture manufacturer located in the small town of Haslev, close to Copenhagen—as well as Dutch manufacturer Bovenkamp. Hansen's also known for his collaboration with venerable Danish porcelain company Royal Copenhagen, which produced a series of rosewood tables surfaced with ceramic tiles handpainted and glazed by artists like Grethe Helland-Hansen and Nils Thorssen.

Though little is known about Hansen’s life, his designs are increasingly popular among vintage lovers, who hold him in high esteem for his high quality joinery and materials. Hansen’s dining tables, nesting tables, coffee tables, and sewing tables were produced almost exclusively in rosewood and mahogany, with a small number made from teak. Minimalist in detail, they are characterized by angular silhouettes and tapered legs—exemplars of 1960s Scandinavian idiom.
