Nicolas Cheng was born in Hong Kong in 1982. He moved to Europe as a teenager, and has since lived in London, The Netherlands, Italy, and Sweden. Cheng graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2006, and went on to earn his Masters in Jewelry and Corpus at Konstfack University in 2010. This multicultural background clearly influences his work; Cheng’s designs blend a variety of materials, skills, and techniques in an effort to cross creative boundaries.
In 2011, Cheng established Conversation Piece, a collaborative art and design practice, with fellow designer Beatrice Brovia. Conversation Piece focuses on material culture and craftsmanship, and the partners’ work ranges from installations and interiors to conceptually-driven jewelry, furniture, and decorative arts.
Since 2006, Cheng has exhibited his work widely, including at the Milan Furniture Fair, Design Miami/Basel, London Design Week, and Dutch Design Week. In 2007, he was an artist in residence at Fabrica the Communication Research Center of Benetton Group in Treviso, Italy.
He lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
