About This Piece

Vintage Design

French bedside table in the Louis XV style, likely made around 1900 during the historicist revival of the Rococo. The slender, curved legs and the clearly divided, tripartite front give the piece a tall, serene proportion that, despite the decorative door ornamentation, appears aesthetically unified. Historical context: Bedside tables of this design originated as standard bedroom furnishings and were part of the bourgeois standard of living in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The enclosed door compartment, often lined with marble, served, in the era before en-suite bathrooms, for the hygienic storage of chamber pots and pans directly next to the bed.

Today: usable as a bedside table, side table, telephone table, or as a display for plants or decorative items. Dimensions: H 83 cm × W 39 cm × D 39 cm.

Material and Condition: Material: wood, partly veneered; top made of reddish-brown marble with natural veining; interior compartment lined with marble. Condition: preserved commensurate with age, showing signs of wear and a subtle patina. The marble slab shows natural veining and occasional surface marks; the inside of the drawer bottom shows visible signs of age and use. The piece is stable. These signs of age and use are part of its historical character.
