This work is titled Reverse of the Sky (2002) by the artist Andrea Santarlasci. It consists of two photographs, identical images of a tree branch, presented in two different sizes. The tree motif is a recurring theme in Santarlasci's body of work, appearing in both earlier and later pieces.
The dimensions of the two photographs are: the larger one 52.5 × 52.5 × 5 cm, the smaller one 35.5 × 35.5 × 3.5 cm.
Andrea Santarlasci was born in Pisa in 1964, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the Fine Arts Academies of Venice and Carrara.
His work is elegant, evocative, poetic, and complex. He employs a variety of techniques, with a preference for installation, alongside drawing, photography, sculpture and video.
He creates site-specific works in which the place itself inspires and generates the artwork. Each location holds hidden images and secrets that the artist seeks to reveal, though never fully. Observation of the site precedes any intervention: it is a crucial preliminary phase. Places possess both visible and invisible energies, and the artist intends to establish a dialogue with these energies. It is not only the space that hosts the exhibition, but also the exhibition that hosts the space. The artwork seems to emerge from the site, as if it had always been inscribed within it; the artist’s role is to make it manifest.
Santarlasci often installs his works in locations that are not usually accessible to the public, to reveal little-known or overlooked spaces to viewers.
He has exhibited in internationally renowned exhibitions and shows, as well as in public and private spaces in Italy and abroad, including: The National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome (IT); 12th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, Venice (IT);
Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Prato (IT); MAN, Museum of Art, Nuoro (IT); Art First, Museo Civico Archeologico, Bologna (IT); We Gallery, Berlin (DE); Fondazione Mudima, Milan (IT); Fondazione Teseco per l'Arte, Pisa (IT); Galleries Baumgarten, Freiburg (DE); Galleries Analix, Geneva (CH); Palazzo Vendramin Calergi, collateral event of the Venice Biennale, Venice (IT); Casa Masaccio Center for Contemporary Art, San Giovanni Valdarno, Arezzo (IT); Museum of Graphics, Palazzo Lanfranchi, Pisa (IT); Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Palazzo della Carovana, Pisa (IT); Museo Novecento, Florence (IT); Fondazione Brodbeck, Catania (IT).
