Charlotte Perriand 7 Fauteuil Tournant, Outdoor For Cassina A design icon with an attitude for versatility and functionality designed in 1927 by Charlotte Perriand for her Paris apartment in Place Saint-Sulpice. This exterior swivel armchair, available in the 4-leg version, features an upholstered backrest and seat cushion made of outdoor fabric. Suited to all outdoor settings, it is made of stainless steel with a special textured powder-coat finish made for outdoor use, and comes in several colors; the specially-treated outdoor fabric upholstery is just as beautiful and comfortable as that used on the indoor models. FRAME/SEAT/BACKREST Painted stainless steel. UPHOLSTERY Outdoor fabric. CUSHION PADDING Polyurethane foam and polyester batting. An icon with an aptitude for versatility and functionality designed in 1927 by Charlotte Perriand for her Paris atelier in Place Saint-Sulpice. The design was first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs [Decorative Artists Show] in 1928 and then at the Salon d'Automne [Autumn Salon] in 1929, and is now part of the Le Corbusier®, Pierre Jeanneret®, Charlotte Perriand® Collection. The swivel armchair features backrest and seat cushion padded in polyurethane foam and polyester batting, with fabric upholstery. The outdoor version is made of stainless steel with special textured powder-coat finish specifically for outdoor use, in five colours, and outdoor polyester fabric upholstery that echoes the same aesthetics as the indoor models. Since 2016, the armchair has undergone a major structural update that led to its being awarded Catas certifications.

About the Creator

Charlotte Perriand

Born in Paris in 1903, Charlotte Perriand studied at the Ecole de l’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs. In 1927, inspired by his architectural treatises, Perriand persuaded Le Corbusier to employ her. He put her in charge of prototype production and public presentations of the studio’s work. In collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret, Perriand developed a series of tubular steel chairs, which were—and are still today—hailed as icons of the machine age.

In 1940, she travelled to Japan as an official advisor on industrial design. When Japan joined the war, she found herself trapped in Vietnam from 1942 until 1946. During her exile, Perriand studied local techniques of woodwork and weaving. She returned to France intent on introducing straw and bamboo to modern design.

Back in France, Perriand continued her work with Le Corbusier and Prouvé. She was integral to the design of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. She remained an influential figure in the modern movement until her death in 1999.
